Pretty pots can do more than hold flowers on an outdoor table. They can be used to protect dips and other dishes from party-crashing insects. Lift the pot by sticking one finger through the drain hole, or create a handle by cutting an 18-inch length of 1/4-inch cord and knotting the ends together. Thread the looped end through the drain hole in the flowerpot.

You could use any colour rope to work with your outdoor decor….

Long after the last coats have dried on your new paint job, you can still have easy access to the color names and numbers for touch-ups. I am always asking my clients for a sample of their paint colour, I would love it if anyone gave me a set of these to work with on their home design project….

Save the wooden stirrers you used to mix the paint, let them dry, and then write the names and numbers of the colors on the ends of the sticks. Use a length of twine to bundle the sticks by room.

Love the design of this office area. 7 boxes with doors, 3 open boxes and you have storage and art pieces above your desk. Below that a wire pulled straight to clip inspiration and important notes. Desk not wide enough ? Add a furniture piece just a few inches lower that tucks in so it looks to the eye that it’s all one. Add an interesting chair, a great lamp, a few pen tins and you have a wonderful laptop landing pad…

Parisian flat lay untouched for 70 years

Last October I found a few articles about an apartment in Paris that’s door had not been opened in 70 years… I was dreaming about Paris yesterday and thought I would share the story with you all.

The year is 1940. Germany is marching through the French countryside. Italy has thrown down its white glove. France and Britain are losing troops by the handful and in the summer French leaders sign their surrender. Pictures are taken of Adolf Hitler posing with the Eiffel Tower at his back.

Before all these events can transpire, a young woman, the granddaughter of the exceptionally beautiful Marthe de Florian locks her Parisian flat for the last time and flees the city for the South of France, leaving her life behind.

Seventy years later at 91 years old, the woman passes away without ever having returned to her Parisian home.

Even though she never returned, she continued to pay rent on the flat and at the time of her death, the matter of assessing and selling her estate was turned over to a team of experts and auctioneers who then discovered the existence of the mysterious flat.

Behind the door, under a thick layer of dust lay a treasure trove of turn-of-the-century objects including a painting by the 19th century Italian artist Giovanni Boldini.

The painting, the artist…

The flat near the Trinité church in Paris between the Pigalle red light district and Opera.

I googled the area and this is what it looks like now…

Giovanni Boldini (31 December 1842 – 11 July 1931) was an Italian genre and portrait painter, belonging to the school of Paris. According to a 1933 article in Time magazine, he was known as the "Master of Swish" because of his flowing style of painting.

Entering the untouched, cobweb-filled flat in Paris’ 9th arrondissement, one expert said it was like stumbling into the castle of Sleeping Beauty, where time had stood still since 1900.

“There was a smell of old dust,” said Olivier Choppin-Janvry, who made the discovery. Walking under high wooden ceilings, past an old wood stove and stone sink in the kitchen, he spotted a stuffed ostrich and a Mickey Mouse toy dating from before the war…

As well as an exquisite dressing table.

But he said his heart missed a beat when he caught sight of a stunning tableau of a woman in a pink muslin evening dress.

The painting was by Boldini and the subject a beautiful Frenchwoman who turned out to be the artist’s former muse and whose granddaughter it was who had left the flat uninhabited for more than half a century.

The muse was Marthe de Florian, an actress with a long list of ardent admirers, whose fervent love letters she kept wrapped neatly in ribbon and was still on the premises. Among the admirers was the 72nd prime minister of France, George Clemenceau, but also Boldini.

The expert had a hunch the painting was by Boldini, but could find no record of the painting. “No reference book dedicated to Boldini mentioned the tableau, which was never exhibited,” said Marc Ottavi, the art specialist he consulted about the work.

When Mr Choppin-Janvry found a visiting card with a scribbled love note from Boldini, he knew he had struck gold. “We had the link and I was sure at that moment that it was indeed a very fine Boldini”.

He finally found a reference to the work in a book by the artist’s widow, which said it was painted in 1898 when Miss de Florian was 24.

The starting price for the painting was €300,000 but it rocketed as ten bidders vied for the historic work. Finally it went under the hammer for €2.1 million, a world record for the artist.

“It was a magic moment. One could see that the buyer loved the painting; he paid the price of passion,” said Mr Ottavi.

I was sitting at my desk this morning, day dreaming… worked on floor plans late into the night… just not in the mood to work today, so I let my imagination run away to Paris…

Where I would like to be today, on the hunt for a new bedroom project...

Looking for treasures on the streets of Paris

Finding interesting pieces, I would use the little three drawer dresser for a nightstand.

Bed found... I would keep the upholstered headboard & footboard on this bed the way is is. Loving the tiffany colour....

a new mattress and bedding and were done.

Use an interesting antique lamp for the nightstand.

I would use this mirror over the nightstand... would wonderful with the reflection of light from the lady lamp....

The chairs and ottoman reupholstered in a crisp silver grey hue of two tone stripe, colour pulled from the bedding, would be amazing...

I am thinking the wood trim would be nice repainted in a dark opalescent grey, a few shades deeper than the fabric.

Enough dreaming for today... I must say that was a fun imaginary trip to Paris on a Saturday morning.

House sealed up for 100 years, reopened….

A late 19th Century town-house in central France that was sealed up for more than 100 years has finally been opened to the public in accordance with its owner's last wishes.

Louis Mantin

Louis Mantin was an aesthete and gentleman of leisure who bequeathed his opulent home to the town of Moulins on condition that a century later it be a museum.

After he died in 1905, the mansion was closed up and fell into dilapidation. Now thanks to a 3.5m euro ($4.7m; £2.9m) refit funded by local authorities, it has been returned to its original pristine state.

The result is a remarkable time-capsule, combining rich fin-de-siecle furnishings, archaeological curios, skulls and other Masonic paraphernalia, a collection of stuffed birds, as well as the latest domestic gadgets such as electricity and a flushing loo.

Life of pleasure

Born in Moulins in 1851, Mantin had an undistinguished career as a civil servant, but at the age of 42, he inherited a fortune from his father and thenceforth dedicated his life to pleasure, science and the arts.

First of all he had his mansion constructed in the centre of Moulins on the site of a former palace of the dukes of Bourbon, the local rulers who were heirs to the French and Spanish royal houses.

Then he decorated the house with imported tapestries, paintings and porcelain.

He commissioned sculptures and wood-carvings, and on the top floor installed his personal museum of Egyptian relics, Neolithic oil-lamps, prehistoric flints and medieval locks and keys.

The house was gradually forgotten by the world, but not by locals

Mantin only had a few years to indulge his aesthetic fantasies. Knowing that his death was approaching, he made a will in which he made sure his treasured house would be saved.

"In the will, he says that he wants the people of Moulins in 100 years time to be able to see what was the life of a cultured gentleman of his day," said assistant curator Maud Leyoudec.

"A bachelor with no children, he was obsessed with death and the passage of time. It was his way of becoming eternal."

Some confusion surrounds the exact terms of the will.

According to local people, Mantin specifically said that the house should be locked up for a century and then opened up to the public.

However the truth is less sensational, if only slightly.

In fact, Mantin stipulated simply that in 100 years time the mansion should be a museum. He said nothing about what should happen in between.

Collective memory

The fact that the house was totally abandoned was thus not a predetermined condition - it was just what actually took place.

"The house was gradually forgotten by the world. But not by the people of Moulins," said Mantin's great-niece Isabelle de Chavagnac.

As well as electricity, the house had modern bathrooms

"Here everybody was waiting for the day when a 100 years would have passed and the house would be opened once again. It is odd how the collective memory of a place never dies."

Curiously it was Isabelle de Chavagnac - as one of Mantin's last known descendants - who played a key role in getting the house re-opened.

Under the will, the house would have reverted to her had it not been turned into a museum once the century had passed.

She had no desire to take the possession of the house. Quite the contrary, she wanted Mantin's wishes to be fulfilled.

But by threatening to exercise her right in law to take back the mansion, she forced the local authorities to act. They found the money to renovate, and the house opened at the end of 2010.

Five years late, but no-one is counting…

This client started by purchasing (without design help) a loveseat, 2 overly large recliners and 2 armless chairs, nothing fit properly … the day they were delivered she called our manager and asked for design help…. This redo cost her 25% restocking fee to return what she had ordered ! Expensive lesson ! I was called in to measure and come up with a new design for the room… weeks later the presentation you see below happened… Lets just say they are very happy they had me fix the problems… remember scale, colour, space planning… really does matter….

Presentation set up…

Sofa, with pillow fabrics from the Kincaid Collection… I uses the new Custom Select Sofa’s, clients get to pick from 4 back shapes, 4 different arm shapes and 2 different legs or a skirt. After that they get to pick from 4 different cushion fills which is becoming very popular because each design comes out different for each client.
We are loving this in our office…thank you Kincaid

We have had an adventure… looking for new patio pavers and wall tiles, I could not believe how many there were to chose from… and the price difference from place to place…sometimes for the same pavers…

These are the pavers we found… I was in love…

I had fun working out the plan, at this point I was keeping my fingers crossed the 8x8 tiles would not be to busy…

Very pleased at how it turned out…Now it’s done it’s time for the furniture, a table for 4 / our old chairs and table / new bbq my hubby got for fathers day…

I took these pictures in the evening after it rained, the new grass is doing really well, it’s the end of the season so we will add more new grass in the spring…

Lastly, this is the view from our patio of our bushes in the evening with the lights on… can’t wait for the first dinner bbq party with friends…

We are only one day away from being a part of what is probably going to be the largest environmental movement in history – Earth Hour 2010! Canada’s participation is expected to exceed last year’s record breaking year and globally we are aiming to reach 1 billion people worldwide.

This year we will be turning out the lights, tv, computer, etc like last year…. we will have wine and french onion soup and play cards by candle light… we might leave the lights out for the rest of the evening and keep playing cards, we so enjoyed ourselves last year… & the wine. lol

Make sure you remember to turn out your lights tomorrow night (Saturday, the 27th) at 8:30 p.m. for Earth Hour!

A few days ago I was on their blog looking at videos of House Tours and this interesting and wonderful music was playing… something about fireflies…

A day later when the song would not leave my head I looked it up on You Tube…(so I did not have to bother anyone, by asking) and I found it… click on this Owl City

So this weekend I went out looking for my copy of the album…yes I know it is a CD, but I still call them albums because I can!

The whole album is wonderful, we listened to it instead of Sirius Satellite Radio all weekend…and that is saying something trust me…

Loft area for tv watching and computer using…

Clients inspiration artwork for the loft… I embraced the colour of the frame when looking for pillow accents…

Desk and file cabinet at the top of the stairs… above the desk on the wall I specked a yard of pillow fabric to be purchased to cover a bulletin board. Great shot of colourful art on the wall and so useful…

Desk lamp & clock…

This lamp can be raised or lowered to suit my clients needs for light on the desk…

Specked the pillows with black cord

As you can see in the floor plan, the ottoman placed in front of the sofa seat will make a chaise for my client to enjoy while watching a movie.

20” pillows in the fun floral and round velvet pillow I found in our $5.00 pillow bin…how sweet is this accent pillow and how sweet was the price!

What do you do with discontinued rug samples ?

In my world…you make them into a useful area rug…

It covers the electrical cords and tv cable that run (for now) in front of the doorway between our livingroom and bedroom… someday I will get an electrician to move the power plugs etc… but for now I need to cover them so I don’t trip and kill myself going from room to room…

I taped them together with duck tape, hehe

I mentioned my skinny tree, well here it is…

I love this tree, just fits the scale of our small condo and I still have lots of room for my favourite decorations…

The drapes in the living room are not up yet, I have not found the drapery rod I like…so we still have the old verticals up…I want to do it right so I have put up with them…but looking at this picture, I must go rod shopping soon and get my beautiful drapes up…

Front door and hallway, after the holidays we are working on drilling a hole through the artwork for the peep hole in the door and screwing the the lady in the hat perfectly to the back of the door…

This is looking to the right side of our condo, pasted our patio to the bushes and beyond…we had a lot of snow here… there are lights in the bushes…they look so pretty peaking out from all that snow….

This is a straight on shot of the bushes from the condo…you can see the lights of the restaurant across the street…so great to live downtown with everything walking distance in a snow storm…spaghetti across the street and pancakes just around the corner…

This is looking to the right side of the patio…we have birds in that tree all summer…so nice to here the bird parties early in the morning…

This was Christmas 2007, I had so much fun with the animal print & black and white wrapping papers…used black ribbon and crystals on anything that did not move.

Christmas Dining Table, more animal print on chargers…and crowns used for napkin rings. For flowers on the table, I used white carnations and large faux diamonds sprinkled on the flowers.

I love using a black table cloth, it is so dramatic, no one is expecting black and animal print for Christmas…

My problem this Christmas is finding a great wrapping paper…it is all red and green and snowmen… I will be out this weekend looking for animal print paper again, wish me luck!

This would be a great room for a cocktail party, two conversion areas in one room.

Outdoor room love and great private place to swim, to me this a everyday vacation spot in your own side yard…

This is my favourite picture on the web so far, not sure why, Just is! I can just feel a nap happening in this room.

Oh I can see having a bubble bath in this room, room love again, I would cover the mantel with candles, dim the lights and listen to music…are you with me?

Staircase love, love the orange wall and black stairs…I think my condo needs a orange wall…yes…maybe in the kitchen?

French Connection Antiques is closing its doors, Pilar I will miss you!

It was always an interesting store to visit, had the best parties, and hosted Kimberley Seldons seminar… which was three days I will never forget.
